Washington State’s Oxygen-Barrier Tubing

Oxygen-barrier tubing plays an important role in protecting closed-loop radiant and hydronic heating systems from problems associated with oxygen entering the circulating water. Custom Floor Heating LLC provides oxygen-barrier tubing installation and system evaluation for residential and commercial properties throughout Washington State, including Seattle, Bellevue, Issaquah & All of Washington State. Family owned and operated since 2001, we bring more than 30 years of hands-on heating experience and UA Local 32 apprenticeship training to radiant floor and hydronic heating systems.

Whether you are planning a new radiant heating system or experiencing recurring problems with an older system, call (206) 335-4600 or complete the contact form to discuss oxygen-barrier tubing in Seattle, Bellevue, Issaquah & All of Washington State.

Oxygen-Barrier Tubing in Seattle, Bellevue, Issaquah & All of Washington State

Hydronic heating systems circulate heated water through tubing, boilers, pumps, manifolds, valves, and other components. In a properly designed closed-loop system, limiting oxygen diffusion into the circulating water can help protect susceptible metal components from corrosion.

Oxygen-barrier PEX incorporates a barrier layer designed to reduce the amount of oxygen that can pass through the tubing. Custom Floor Heating LLC installs oxygen-barrier tubing for appropriate radiant floor and hydronic heating applications.

Why an Oxygen Barrier Matters

Some components used in hydronic systems contain ferrous metals that can be affected by continued oxygen exposure. When excessive oxygen enters the circulating water, corrosion can develop and contribute to iron-oxide contamination within the system.

Over time, corrosion and contamination may affect components such as circulator pumps, zone valves, manifolds, expansion tanks, boilers, and other mechanical equipment. This is why tubing selection should be considered as part of the complete hydronic system rather than simply as a way to move heated water.

Problems With Non-Oxygen-Barrier Tubing

Some older radiant heating systems were installed using tubing without an oxygen barrier. Depending on the equipment and system configuration, continued oxygen diffusion may contribute to corrosion and recurring mechanical problems.

Signs that an older hydronic system may need further evaluation can include:

  • Repeated circulator pump failures
  • Sticking or clogged zone valves
  • Corrosion on system components
  • Dark or contaminated system water
  • Problems with manifolds or expansion components
  • Recurring heating or circulation issues

Replacing an individual failed component may provide a temporary repair without correcting the condition contributing to repeated failures. Custom Floor Heating LLC can evaluate the complete system to determine what may be causing the problem.

Oxygen-Barrier Tubing for Radiant Floor Heating

Radiant floor heating uses tubing installed beneath or within the floor to circulate heated water throughout a property. Because that tubing becomes a permanent part of the heating system, choosing the appropriate product during installation is important.

Custom Floor Heating LLC installs oxygen-barrier tubing for new radiant floor heating systems, renovations, additions, and other appropriate applications. We consider tubing layout, spacing, flow requirements, floor construction, manifolds, controls, and boiler equipment when planning the system.

Mr. PEX Oxygen-Barrier Tubing

Custom Floor Heating LLC works with Mr. PEX oxygen-barrier tubing for radiant and hydronic heating applications. Mr. PEX products can be incorporated into systems where heated water circulates between the boiler and the property’s radiant heating zones.

Our experience extends beyond tubing installation to the boilers, circulators, manifolds, controls, and other equipment connected to it. This allows us to approach the tubing as one part of a complete hydronic heating system.

Visit our Mr. PEX Tubing page for additional information about these products and applications.

Evaluating Older Radiant Heating Systems

If an existing system contains non-oxygen-barrier tubing, replacing all of the tubing is not automatically the appropriate solution. The condition of the boiler, pumps, valves, manifolds, piping, and other equipment should first be evaluated to understand how the system is being affected.

Custom Floor Heating LLC can inspect an existing radiant or hydronic system and determine whether corrosion, contamination, equipment age, or another condition is contributing to recurring problems.

Depending on the findings, recommendations may involve servicing individual components or considering a more comprehensive hydronic or boiler retrofit.

Oxygen-Barrier Tubing and Boiler Retrofits

Installing a new boiler on an older hydronic system requires careful consideration of the system it will be connected to. If corrosion or contamination is already present, simply replacing the boiler may not address the underlying condition.

As part of a boiler retrofit, Custom Floor Heating LLC can evaluate existing tubing and other hydronic components to determine what should remain, what should be serviced, and what may need to be updated to properly support new equipment.

Visit our Boiler Retrofits, Boiler Installations, and IBC Boiler Installations pages to learn more about system upgrade options.

Residential and Commercial Applications

Custom Floor Heating LLC works with oxygen-barrier tubing in both residential and commercial hydronic heating applications. Projects may involve radiant floor heating, new construction, remodeling, heating additions, or upgrades to existing systems.

With more than 30 years of hands-on experience, we consider the complete heating system when planning tubing installation or investigating problems with an older system.
